The event, hosted by Professor the Lord Laird of Artigarvan in conjunction with the Francis Hutcheson Institute for Enlightenment Studies, debated the role of Europe's Islands. Islands were defined in a physical sense by geography and political by being outside of the EU. There was a particular focus on the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and Switzerland.
There were approximately 80 attendees including senior professionals, representatives of industry bodies and politicians. Presentations were given by experts including James John, a Partner in solicitors Rooks Rider, and US tax expert Darlene Hart, CEO of US Tax and Financial Services Group. This was followed by a lively Q&A session.
A range of views were exchanged across the evening but the value and importance of the Islands in Europe to the UK and global economies was a common theme. In his concluding address, Professor the Lord Laird of Artigarvan stressed "the fundamental importance of the Islands engaging at a political level to ensure that the Islands in Europe's important role in global affairs was communicated to counter the negative and often inaccurate rhetoric and image portrayed in the media".
